ART is…Episode 1

ART is…Episode 1. Artists are often asked:
“Why is THAT art?”
Sometimes the person goes on to say,
“Isn’t art supposed to be beautiful? ” or “It doesn’t look like anything!”. We artists are always flabbergasted, challenged, unprepared and at a loss for words when asked these questions. For us “THE ART QUESTION” is sort of a settled question or we would not be spending so much time making it!

But we are an inarticulate lot!

We fumble around to answer your questions! We take Twists and turns and chase rabbits down rabbit holes! So, I thought I’d spend a few blog posts musing on this topic! Maybe you will find it interesting, enlightening, revealing or hogwash!

SO LET’S START
ART IS…

Art is all sorts of things, ideas and experiences created for all sorts of reasons and applications.
Art can literally be made from anything or nothing!
Art can be for seeing, hearing, touching, tasting!
Art is at the foundation, entry level of almost all manufacturing. Someone has to design the thing that is being made. That is often an artist. The engineer then designs how it can be manufactured.
Art is part of all our favorite entertainment: TV and movies. I don’t just mean the actors and musicians. There are artists who draw story boards, set and costume designs. Have you watched the amazingly long credits at the end of a movie? So many people are involved. Think about this: how many of them might be artists who help imagine the parts of the whole as well as the totality of the story?

Take a look at your fork: an artist designed that.

Take a look at the tire treads on your car: an artist drew that.

Take a look at your chair: an artist drew that and may even have made it.

Take a look at the buildings around you and imagine how they could have been built if an artist/architect had not drawn them first.
