What Is Textile Art To Susan Hensel Projects

Textile art has many meanings and depends on who you speak with. To the fellow artist, it is another form of expressing yourself. In essence, it means to tell a story to help you feel an emotion. To the viewer, it could offer a sense of subtle beauty and inspiration. For Susan Hensel Projects, textile art is a form of persistence and resilience.

Winter Is Coming…

This year has an early winter in store for Minnesota.  We usually get around 54″ per year and have already received nearly 18 ” and it is not yet Thanksgiving.  But still we persist in walking the dog and enjoying fresh air.

Restaurant meals and family gatherings are at a limit.  But still I persist: cooking delicious, healthy food and filling the freezer. My son and I will cook together over Facetime on Thanksgiving.  It should be quite the giggle!

The art world is under threat from the pandemic again. Thankfully, things are still on track for most shows with no cancellations. But I persist! I make new art, send out proposals, look for collaborations and online opportunities as I wait for more brick and mortar galleries to open up again. Actually, after a two year wait and a little negotiation, a new show is on the books for 2022 in Maryland. IN A BRICKS AND MORTAR GALLERY! It’s almost hard to imagine!

And then, today I learn that my work had been chosen by the Textile Study Group of New York for their fall online exhibition! I cannot say how wonderful it is to be exhibiting with such talent and fellow artists.  The exhibition is known as Gallery 29, their 29th online exhibition.  My newish work Procession is the one they select. It is another one of my sculptures that can be hung or experienced in many ways. It is composed of three “fronds” that can be laid on the floor, composed various ways on the wall or separated out into as many as three different rooms!  You choose!  How fun is that?

Yup!  We persist making and exhibiting textile art at Susan Hensel Projects. Persistence pays off sometimes.
