Chromatic Exertion
This artwork began on the shores of Lake Superior. I took my smaller embroidery machine, lots of thread, and a couple of bolts of felt on vacation with me. I played around with color and materials and the ever present, ever pregnant-with-possibility-question: What if…?
So I wondered, “What if I stitched an equal section together on the four sides of a 4″ square?” I thought it might become a bowl, or a box. When I tried it, objects did begin to appear. The most exciting object was the box that was not quite turned all-the-way-right-side-out.
Using three shades of thread, gradients, and three-dimensional forms, the exertion of the hand is made real. Each “scrunchie” began as a 4 ” square but ended as a unique, colorful object.
