Visionary Threshold

A curious piece, made intuitively. I stitched 2 of these shapes in pale lavender and gold on 2 layers of black felt. One of the forms was folded into a module for another sculpture. But this flat piece kept niggling at me. I left it in the hoop for a long time. Finally I put it up on the wall and it “spoke!” Barnwood and rusty spikes were needed to elevate this piece to visionary status.

Susan received her BFA from the University of Michigan in 1972 with a double major in painting and sculpture and a concentration in ceramics. With a history, to date, of over 200 exhibitions, more than 30 of them solo, twenty garnering awards. Above all, Hensel’s desire to communicate stories through art continues to be a powerful motivator.
