2nd Annual Artists' Book Exhibition

Through January 2015, WoCA Projects will present its 2nd Annual Juried Artists’ Books Exhibition exploring the diversity within the artist book medium, including both traditional book-binded forms as well as (but not limited to) those works that use books as a reference or metaphor to create other conceptual forms.
The exhibition was co-juried by Beverly Carver, Special Collections Librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, Texas and Lauren Cross, Director/Curator of WoCA Projects, Fort Worth, Texas
One artist will receive the $500 Walter and Marilee Landry Purchase Award, sponsored by Glenn and Sandy Landry, and the artists' selected work will be added to the University of Texas at Arlington’s Art/Art History & Rare Books Collection.

JURIED EXHIBITION BRINGS IN ARTISTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY USING EXPERIMENTATION AS SOCIAL COMMENTARY.
Fort Worth, Texas (October 20, 2014)– WoCA Projects will hold an opening reception on Friday, October 31st, 2014 from 6-8:30 p.m. for the international juried exhibition, Material Matters, exploring the practice of material and medium experimentation as a platform for social and cultural commentary. Material Matters was juried by Erin Cluley, Owner and Director of Erin Cluley Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and features selected artists examining structure, mark-making, memory, abstraction, space, and texture (amongst many other themes) through a variety of mediums.
In this exhibition representing 15 artists from across the country, Material Matters showcases a diversity of thought and application; in which art is used to expand our literacy and references for society. Featured artists include: Roman Arevalo (Miami, FL), Samantha Dorgan (West Chester, OH), Alex Ebstein (Baltimore, MD), Erin Ethridge (Tyler, TX), Dana Harper (Columbus, OH), Justin Korver (Sioux Center, IA), Dave Kube (West Peoria, IL), Hildy Maze (East Hampton, NY), Samara Rosen (Houston, TX), Chris Thorson , Vonda Yarberry (Springfield, MI), and Dana Younger (Austin, TX). About Juror
Erin Cluley is the owner and director of Erin Cluley Gallery in Dallas, Texas, a contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and mid-career artists from Dallas and the United States. Erin served as the Director of Exhibitions at Dallas Contemporary from 2009 - 2014 where she worked on the production of exhibitions by Zoe Crosher, Gabriel Dawe, K8 Hardy, Georg Herold, Aaron Parazette, Richard Phillips, John Pomara, Rob Pruitt, Jennifer Rubell, Julian Schnabel, Juergen Teller, Walter Van Beirendonck, Inez & Vinoodh, Erwin Wurm and others. Erin Cluley also worked with artists and their crews producing murals by Shepard Fairey, Soner, JMR, Sourgrapes, Faile, Michael Sieben and JR.
Prayers: Flags & Fibers by Nicole Dane
Through October 18th: WoCA Projects features Prayers: Flags and Fibers by Nicole Dane, an exhibition highlighting the works of fiber artist Nicole Dane. Dane’s work uses of a broad range of artistic media such as hand-woven and dyed textiles, metalworking, and various sculptural techniques. Her current body of work explores the concept of prayer and the transient quality of material and self in the context of existence. Expressed through her sculptures and wall-hangings, prayer is the exploration and sharing of a material manifestation of hope.
Prayers will be the featured exhibition during the Fort Worth Art Dealer's Association's Fall Gallery Night on Saturday, September 6th, from 2-9 p.m. Additionally, the Riverside Arts District will have its second Better Block event, Embrace the Street 2, on the same day from 11-9 p.m. So come out and enjoy a day full of art-making, food, and fun.
Nicole Dane was the winner of WoCA's (Inter)Connections exhibition "Best of Show" in October 2013, winning an opportunity for a solo-exhibition at the gallery.

Fort Worth, Texas—July 18, 2014— ARTIST SANAH BROWN USES PERSONAL LIFE EXPERIENCES TO MOTIVATE AND EMPOWER.
Transparency: Works by Sanah Brown features works that reflect the artist's personal life experiences using texture, words, and collage techniques with motivational themes. Brown considers her process of making art to be a "blueprint" and merges various art-making processes, technology, and resources into her paintings.
Born in New York City, Sanah Brown was raised by a family of artists. She found her passion while attending Washington Irving High school, where she began to dabble in photography and art and began receiving awards. Sanah attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, majoring in Fashion Photography and Fine Arts. Brown moved from New York to Fort Worth, Texas in 2001.
Sanah creates paintings using a wide range of materials including acrylic paint, fabrics, buttons, beads, scrapbook paper and many other found objects while also using personalized quotes, poetry and scriptures in some of her work. Sanah gleans inspiration from fabrics, the vintage era, color, and creates images that are intentionally playful.
In addition to her studio art practice, Brown is an arts entrepreneur and owner of A WOMAN WITH A BRUSH, creating commissioned wedding portraits for local patrons, and Salvation Thru Art, a creative ministry bringing inspirational messages through art. Sanah has also worked teaching art classes to people of all ages in the DFW area.
The artist reception for Transparency is Saturday, August 9th from 6-8:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. The exhibition closes on August 31, 2014. Fort Worth, Texas—May 5, 2014— Group Exhibition explores Artists framing and reframing personal and biographical narratives through art.
‘Auto-biography’: Artists (Re) Writing and Telling Histories is a cross-cultural exhibition of local, regional, and national artists who work in the realm of auto-biographical/biographical inquiry or whose life stories, philosophies, and actions are traced within their arts practice. Featured artists are: Christopher Blay, Michael Farmer, Jan Ayers Friedman, Jessica Fuentes, Pallavi Govinathan, Letitia Huckaby, Mona Kasra, Jack McGilvray, Devon Nowlin, Bill Porter, Raul Rodriguez, and Red Yellow (a.k.a Susan Sponsler and Kathy Lovas).
The opening reception for Auto-biograghy is Friday, May 9th from 6-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. The exhibition closes on July 7, 2014. Featured programming for the exhibition includes a workshop with exhibiting artist Jessica Fuentes on Sunday, June 1st at 2 p.m. Additional programs TBA.

From March 21s-April 25th, WoCA Projects presents a themed solo exhibition by Dallas-based artist Susan Sponsler featuring her new work entitled, "The Hoodie Project," which is a series of memorial portraits and artworks inspired by the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin.
In The Hoodie Project, Sponsler widens the discussion by giving voice to other innocent young men who were violently harmed either by mistake or by prejudice like Vincent Chin (beaten to death by two autoworkers who blamed the Japanese auto industry for their layoffs) and Brandon Robinson (unarmed college football player shot by police). The portraits represent individuals who want to keep Trayvon Martin and other victims' memories alive and who feel that the Stand Your Ground Law provides a loophole for violent and fatal confrontations.
The Opening reception for The Hoodie Project will be on Friday, March 21st from 6-8 p.m. The artist will set up a pop-up studio in the gallery to photograph those interested in participating in the project wearing a hoodie. Hoodies will be provided or wear your own hoodie. No logos or text can be on the front of the hoodie. Participants receive a signed print of their hoodie portrait.
Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. The exhibition closes on Friday, April 25th.
About The Artist
Susan Sponsler earned her MFA in photography from Texas Woman's University and was a fellow at the American Photography Institute National Graduate Seminar at New York University.
Her work explores issues related to identity, being an Asian American international adoptee and consists of photo-based artworks which include quilts, color and black-and-white photography, encaustic paintings, sculpture and installation.
Sponsler's works have been shown in Seoul, South Korea; Panama City, Panama; and in many US cities including Los Angeles, New York City, Fort Worth, Denton and Dallas. Her work is held in several private collections and in the permanent collections of the Korean American Museum in Los Angeles and Texas Instruments in Dallas. She is married to independent filmmaker John Carstarphen.
Tuba Öztekin Köymen is an artist and designer living in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Born in Turkey, she graduated from the Department of Graphic Design at Bilkent University (1995), later receiving a MFA in Photography and Digital imaging at the Maryland Institute College of Art (1999). Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at the Center of Documentary Studies at Duke University, Light Factory (North Carolina), and the Museum Center in Baku, Azerbaijan. Köymen has participated in various workshops, collaborative projects, as well as organized and assisted with exhibitions of photography and art, including the Istanbul Biennial. An Adjunct Professor of Photography at the Texas Christian University, Köymen is currently a visiting professor at Austin College in Sherman, Texas.

Coco Rico documents her memories of vegetation and her parents’ work in agricultural and farming industries through lithographs, drawings, and text. Rico's work bears the symbolic gestures of her personal narrative and is coded with allegorical meaning.
Born among a proud mexican culture in Los Angeles, California; Coco Rico grew up with little knowledge of the power of education. She uses her arts education as a tool to reconstruct her ‘role” within a traditional Mexican family. Rico is a MFA Candidate in Printmaking at University of Dallas in Irving, TX.
Rico's exhibition will be open through March 15, 2014. Closing Reception is free and open to the public. Gallery Hours are Thurs-Sat from 12-3 p.m. and by appointment.

(Inter) Connections
(Inter) Connections is a juried exhibition that explores the concept of “interconnectivity”: the idea that all things, people, and environments have a inter-relatedness that connects us. Artists selected for the exhibition have explored this concept through a variety of expressions, interpretations, and approaches.
Theories on interconnectedness have been proposed by many, however, women of color scholars have championed this framework for creating non-oppositional solutions for change. Thus, (Inter) Connections marks WoCA's very first exhibition featuring artists from various backgrounds and geographical locations, while opening an important dialogue across multiple artistic mediums and narratives, including information seeking, social media & networks; biology, identity, nature & ecosystems; aesthetics, and society & politics.
So come out and enjoy our exciting exhibition reception on Friday, October 18th, from 6-9 p.m., featuring curatorial remarks from guest juror, Lilia Kudelia, Adjunct Curator at Dallas Contemporary (Dallas, Texas), an awards presentation, and light refreshments and drinks.
