Seek and Ye Shall Find | Susan Hensel Projects

Art is still out in the world as well as online

look all the time. I look deeply at other people’s art every day. Seeking opportunities every day. Finding opportunities every day. I get opportunities sometimes!

I’ve had kind of good run-on opportunities lately.  Taking chances has paid off.  This does not mean that I have avoided rejections, even dearly desired opportunities have rejected me lately.  It’s simply part of the process.  But sometimes you really do get lucky by taking a chance.

I was spending time grazing on Instagram, filling my eyes with images and probably avoiding something I did not feel like doing. I came across a post from someone I exhibit with on ODETTA Digital.  The post was showing work they had exhibited at Garret Museum of Art. I was curious. I had never heard of this museum. So I searched and I found an application form. Low and behold, I was invited to be one of 6 female artists to show a substantial body of work in 2023.

Seek and Ye Shall Find, INDEED!

OBSERVING MOTHERHOOD

juror Laura Cloud

at ARC Gallery in Chicago, opens this weekend, May 4.

I am always seeking all sorts of opportunities.

Observing Motherhood” is an exhibition of innovative approaches to the representation of Motherhood, shifting the viewpoint from the overly nostalgic imagery promoted by popular culture, to a critical exploration of the subject. This work goes beyond the conventional stereotypes and represents a wide range of perspectives and alternative viewpoints on the idea of Motherhood. The exhibition will run from April 30 – June 19, 2021. I am showing My Mother’s Marriage. Seek and Ye Shall Find | Susan Hensel Projects

Womyn’s Werx

And then, CHEESE BOX OF VULVAS nearly sold out in Womyn’s Werx, Studio Montclair, Montclair, NJ.  I sent 50 trapunto chintz and muslin shells/vulvas…A party in a box.  They are silly, only slightly salacious because they really are developed from drawings of shells, and, let’s face it, they are peppermint pink!  Too Fun.  At $10 a pop…they sold like wildfire!  I have 18 left.  If you are interested in them, contact me (see the form below) as they are not in the inventory on the website!

North of the 45th

Chromatic Wave 1  is soon on its way to an exhibit in the Devos Museum in Michigan. North of the 45th, DeVos Art Museum,  Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI. North of the 45th,  opening in June, is an annual juried exhibition of artists living in the geographical area north of the 45th parallel in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

This line is known as the halfway point between the equator and the north pole, and crossing this line from the south is often associated with being “up north.” The exhibition and this catalog showcase the breadth and depth of artists living in this upper Midwest region from both rural and urban areas. Each year, under the guidance of a juror, the exhibitions have been completely different but equally fascinating to present.

Bones of the Building

Escape Capsule was chosen by the Surface Design Association from among all the members who have image galleries on the site to be part of the online exhibition Bones of the Building.  To be recognized by one of my professional organizations is truly an honor. I did not have to seek this exact opportunity, but I did have to step up to the table and put my work up on their site a couple of years ago and keep it up-to-date.

Textile Study Group of New York Spring Gallery

This one is not yet posted online…but go to Textile Study Group of New York and you will find lots of really great work…including mine;-)  I will be exhibiting River in the upcoming Spring Gallery. I also got to do a lovely interview with them!  You can read it here.

They are a superb organization of superb artists who work in textiles in many ways.  They have great shows, online and in-person, and provide networking, lectures, and workshops.  I had heard about them many years ago and forgot.  Then a couple of years ago, as textiles took over the studio, I  joined and started exhibiting with them. It is paying off and I hope, one day, to have a way to give back.

So, all of this is to say…

Yes, of course, this is a looky-lookyI have a bunch of shows newsletter.  But it also is an opportunity to say:

Thank you! You Too Can Do This!

SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND:

Opportunities galore among the unavoidable rejections of being a working artist!
