The Balls You Cannot See Coming Bring Unintended Results

Life throws all kinds of balls at you. (Didn’t I just say that in a recent post?)

Soft balls, beach balls, bouncy balls, bowling balls…

You haven’t heard from me much lately…like since at least February? Things have been full of surprises around here…not all of them fun.

[su_box title=”THE BOWLING BALL” box_color=”#2a6bb0″]I broke my leg in early February, falling on black ice and sliding down hill on a steep, apparently dry sidewalk, until I was stopped by a snow pile. NOT FUN!  Surgery, rehab, tremendous help from my family and friends…I am now safe in my home, wandering around on a walker, doing PT, working toward a cane. The internal hardware is astounding. No more wheelchairs. So what does an artist do, between naps, with a broken leg?[/su_box]

[su_box title=”UNINTENDED RESULT 1″ box_color=”#2a6bb0″]ARTISTS BOOKS!  SIX OF THEM! I had to do things that I could do sitting down, so I drew accordion books.  [su_custom_gallery source=”media: 12020,12016,12017,12019,12018,12015″ limit=”7″ link=”lightbox” width=”310″ height=”310″ title=”never”]This week, because I am stronger and can stand for a while, I made the covers and the housings.

Are they about the process of confinement and healing?  Sort of.  But they are about so much more.  Some were made from scratch, on blank white strathmore bristol.  Others were created from already painted papers and became what the colors and forms suggested.[/su_box]

[su_box title=”MEANWHILE” box_color=”#2a6bb0″]MEANWHILE OTHER GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING, and ONE SAD ONE

A pre-scheduled showing of BENDING TOWARD BEAUTY just opened in the MG Edwards Gallery at 700 N 4th Street, Springfield, IL.[su_custom_gallery source=”media: 12023,12024,12025,12026,12027″ limit=”7″ link=”lightbox” width=”310″ height=”310″ title=”never”] [/su_box]

[su_box title=”THE SAD EVENT” box_color=”#2a6bb0″]

Sweet silvery grey Gracie, the studio dog in training who had few aspirations other than cuteness and a cessation of pain… succumbed to sepsis. I truly hope she is off somewhere mystical, chasing around after her mother Maggie, the golden haired diva. That’s when she was happiest: with Maggie.[/su_box]

[su_box title=”A BETTER EVENT” box_color=”#2a6bb0″]A BETTER EVENT:  I will be a featured artist for the TEXTILE STUDY GROUP OF NEW YORK on May 17.  Their guest speaker that night is Dorothy Caldwell, a marvelous textile worker.  Go to the link to register for the zoom  and dial in early as I will be sharing my work before her talk at around 6pm. I can’t say enough good about this group.  I’ve been a member for 2-3 years now.  Their speakers are wonderful.  The show opportunities are great.  If you work with textiles in any way, I recommend them. Follow the link to register.[/su_box]

[su_box title=”LATER THIS SUMMER” box_color=”#2a6bb0″]

LATER THIS SUMMER, when I expect that I will walking more freely, I will exhibiting at the Garrett Museum of Art, in Indiana. Curator Angela Green is developing the first ever Women Take The Walls.  I will be exhibiting a variety of works with them, including RUN-OFF MODEL, seen above.[/su_box]

[su_box title=”A SURPRISE WHOSE FRAMEWORK WAS LAID LONG AGO” box_color=”#2a6bb0″]

A long time ago I put artwork on Arts in Embassies website. This is a function of the US government to provide American artwork for display in American embassies around the world. Their curator contacted me for the official residence in Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Republicv .[/su_box]

[su_box title=”UNINTENDED RESULT 2″ box_color=”#2a6bb0″]AND IF THAT’S NOT ENOUGH, I’ll be looking for a new home and studio.  After 2 years, of back to back  serious injuries that impact my mobility, it’s time to move to a single level home.  Wish me luck!  The real estate market is super hot here surrounding Minneapolis.  Multiple offers and all that! I’ve made 3 offers and been out bid. (Addendum:  I have succeeded, w ithout going broke!!  Sometime this summer I will move here: with a generous studio in the walkout basement)/[/su_box]

I’M READY FOR SOME GENTLER BALLS!
