Chromatic Flutter at Susan Hensel Projects

In and Out of the Fold

@Susan Hensel Projects

During the pandemic shutdown, I have been working away. This special online exhibition, In and Out of the Fold, introduces 4 new pieces.

New! Chromatic Flutter Susan Hensel Projects

Chromatic Flutter: Today I want to show you CHROMATIC FLUTTER. I am so thrilled with this piece! It simply lifts my heart each time I look at it! If you know my work, it is obviously part of the group you might call Chromatics. With this, and many other pieces, I am not only investigating how folds change the shape of a piece, but how the skewing of space changes how color is perceived!

WORKING WITH FOLDS

When I am working with folds, I can make a shape fully sculptural simply by choosing the curve and/or angle of the fold. In this piece, curved folds encourage the module to form pinwheels, revealing front and back of the textile at the same time. The curve also causes the form to form a dish shape, lifting the opposite edges into space.

Each part, or module, is stitched from only 2 colors of thread plus a light blue bobbin thread. The base color of each module is an orange thread. The last color stitched is the only aspect that changes. Reflection of light determines what color we perceive. The dish shape manipulates the reflection of the light off the threads, increasing the chromatic range of each of the pairs of colors.

How cool is that!…And then there are the shadows!!!

Go take a look at the detail shots today. You could easily have this piece for your very own!  Chromatic Flutter,  Susan Hensel Projects
