Lambent Journey Tools | New work| Susan Hensel Projects
I just finished a new iteration growing out of the Neotectonic series
It is always curious to me how things happen to become.
As a sculptor, I am materially oriented. I first think of materials and what each can do. Can it bend? Can it fold? Can it hold its shape? What happens if I make it bigger? what happens if I make it smaller? How about pink? How about another color? How can I incorporate it, whatever it might be? Does it need metal? Plumbing parts?
And then, only then, do I wonder what it is saying to me!
The Lambent Journey Tool series is another subset of the Neotectonic Series of artworks that consider climate change as an intense collision between beauty and entropy. The whole series continues to grow out of love for what is still here, on this glorious planet, and my longing to preserve it. With the Neotectonic series I am searching for ways to heal ourselves and the Earth, to create the world we want to see, using all sorts of invented magical navigation tools. The Lambent Journey Tools grew out of the Wayfinders series. The Wayfinders reflected ancient astrolabes and nautical compasses here on Earth. The Lambent Journey Tools are planetary navigation tools, pointing toward re-homing on distant planets! They are larger yet more nimble than the Wayfinders. They are light and can float through space/time in the most magical ways! Oh my! They glow in my imagination, traveling through the dark regions of distant galaxies. The Lambent Journey tools are tragic and hopeful in the same breath. If we are lucky, they may help map a viable future for us.
