Chromatic Flutter at Susan Hensel Projects In and Out of the Fold @Susan Hensel Projects During the pandemic shutdown, I have been working away. This special online exhibition, In and Out of the Fold, introduces 4 new pieces. New! Chromatic Flutter Susan Hensel Projects Chromatic Flutter: Today I want to show you CHROMATIC FLUTTER. I am so thrilled with this piece! It simply lifts my heart each time I look at it! If you know my work, it is obviously part of the group you might call Chromatics. With this, and many other pieces, I am not only investigating how folds change the shape of a piece, but how the skewing of space changes how color is perceived! […]

MARK YOUR CALENDARS Return HERE for the link to the show on September 14![/su_box] Susan Hensel textile work is a dizzying journey of shifting colors and arresting, yet abstract, form. In and Out of the Fold presents biomorphic shapes and geometric patterns with sumptuous texture, representing Hensel’s long history with transformative, sculptural work. The series revels in overwhelming color, serving to create moments of intense sensation. In a world of increasing speed and economic literal mindedness, Hensel slows down time through visual intensity, pausing these dominant concerns. But the pieces do not merely prefer the transcendent to the physical, rather they unite the two modes into a shared space. […]

Upwelling Story Susan Hensel | a story in four parts | 3-d embroidery

2020-10-09T16:07:07-04:00Articles, Embroidery Art|

Upwelling Story Susan Hensel Upwelling Story Susan Hensel-During these times of fewer exhibitions I have been studying a lot.  One of my studies has been, and continues to be, with Transformational Creative Coach Tressa Berman.  I signed on for a six week session to investigate how I might prepare for the reopening of the art world.  It was clear to me that real-world obstacles to exhibition and sales still remained.  It was less clear to me how I might be sabotaging my progress…what kinds of beliefs and habits of thought could be inhibiting how I move forward.  I sometimes joke that parenthood brings on adult-onset-ADD. During this pandemic, it seems to be ADD on steroids! Too many ideas, too little focus. […]

2020-08-26T12:24:21-04:00News, Exhibition, Articles|

While virtual exhibitions are still more common than in-person shows…a few things are moving out the door and into the world for a spell.  I can’t tell you how good it feels to have the work speak in the ways that were always intended. […]

Escaping the upheaval…in my imagination! | Susan Hensel Projects | New Artworks

2020-10-20T17:12:11-04:00Articles|

Escaping into my imagination, Sometimes, during this time of restriction and physical isolation, I lose sight of the abundance around me.  When I do, I have some tricks that seem to help. Every year that I go to Lake Superior, I stop and buy a special handmade mug to take out on the deck with me.  When I desperately need to escape from it all… from the pandemic, cultural upheaval, loud neighborhood parties, fireworks, politics, violence…I get out this mug and sit in my yard and imagine myself there! GEOMETRIC STITCH | Abstract Art by Susan Hensel | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-10-01T17:36:29-04:00Embroidery Art, Exhibition|

The show that almost was! Welcome to the first inaugural curated exhibition on Susan Hensel Projects! In this new world, where long planned exhibitions are delayed or cancelled, I will be presenting curated collections from my website every couple of months. Because the pandemic delayed this the exhibition Geometric Stitch indefinitely, it seemed appropriate to share at least some of the originally scheduled show. This collection includes abstract art by Susan Hensel. It will likely be rescheduled by 621 Gallery, with whom I am very pleased to be working.  But, by the time it finds it place back in the schedule, it will likely be a somewhat different group of work!  So, without any more fanfare: Here it is! Click on the side arrows to view the show.  Click on individual images to learn more about each.   GEOMETRIC STITCH Abstract art by Susan Hensel […]

Juggling As Fast As I Can | COVID-19 Time | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-07-08T17:58:35-04:00News, Articles|

IT’S COVID-19 TIME, in which weeks pass in a day and a day takes weeks. TIME TO JUGGLE AGAIN! It is admittedly hard to develop flow in the studio when I have to stop and “juggle” again! I was very pleased a few weeks ago when a long-planned for the show was approved to open in August in Tallahassee, Florida.  The state was opening up and so was 621 Gallery, with COVID-19 safety guidelines in place.  The show is 3/4 packed and scheduled for pick-up in a couple of weeks. But COVID-19 has its own sense of time.  Florida has now exploded with the virus again, the show has been delayed indefinitely again and I will take all these perfectly packed boxes back to storage, making more room to work in the studio. […]

Want to see something pretty?| textile artist Susan Hensel | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-07-08T18:00:47-04:00Articles, News|

New opportunities are starting to bear fruit for textile artist Susan Hensel. Throughout the pandemic, the cultural unrest and economic downturn, it has been hard to believe that the hard work of the studio will be worth the effort. Truthfully I have slogged through the work of finishing things, photographing things,  boxing up things, adding data to my website.  Slogged. However, it has been hard to feel creative or excited in the midst of such huge changes. But I truly believe that art is more important now than ever. It has the potential to heal, to take people out of their daily troubles, even if only for a moment.  It can be a transcendent experience of peace. So I continued to work and send images out. […]
