Twists and Turns | New Work | Susan Hensel Projects

2021-10-27T14:52:46-04:00Embroidery Art, News, Articles|

Life is always full of Twists and Turns. So is my new artwork. More years ago than I care to count, I lost my husband to a freak accident, leaving me with a two year old. Sad? yes. But there is always learning to be had. The day after his father’s death, I told my son that his Daddy would not be coming home. His 2 year old response,”OK. Let’s play zoo.” So many unforeseen bridges were left to cross ahead, but the imperative, as demonstrated by a two year old, was “going forwardness,” to continue to grow, learn and live. Those imperatives do not disappear.Creativity is our birthright. It has survival value. We need it to grow-up and into our lives, no matter what they may be. […]

What to do when the GPS does not work.?  I am finding my way. Have you ever had your GPS take you to the end of a bridge that does not cross?  or to the center of nowhere? My sense of direction, while not precise, is not horrendous either. With the gentle reminder of the iPhone, I can get to most places…even on time. Yet, I do love maps. My close friend Gwen keeps telling me I need to use maps in the car. But, when you are the only driver…maps aren’t much use as you are driving!  […]

2021-04-01T16:40:29-04:00Articles, Embroidery Art|

“I am always amazed at how I arrived here, steeped in digital embroidery, making hard edged sculptures from soft materials!”   Chromatic Wave    ( I was  honored recently to be featured in a profile on The Textile Study Group of NY website with a stellar group of textile artists who work sculpturally! Do check out the other profiles.  Enjoy!) [su_divider] My background and training are in the arts with a BFA in sculpture and painting.  I worked for many years in ceramics, many years in papermaking, many years in book arts and many years as a gallery director. My “hobby time” was thoroughly fiber: hand spinning, sewing, hand embroidery. Materials with their haptic and scientific qualities always obsess me. […]

How Digital Art Is Made With ODETTA Digital – ESSENTIAL WORKS | Susan Hensel Projects

2021-03-16T10:48:13-04:00Articles, Exhibition|

How Digital Art Is Made For The Winter Exhibition It’s time for a story… I made the decision to join ODETTA Digital art on the SHIM Art Network just as the virus hit. This was around the same time most in-person art viewing was shutting down. I am still grateful and happy in doing so. If you don’t already know, the way I craft my art involves both personal planning and creativity and also computer assisting. I put together the color combinations and style of stitching. Then, I load the information into the digital framework which generates the patterns to bring things to life. […]
