COVID-19 And Art, Time-No-Time

2023-06-08T14:14:27-04:00Articles|

COVID-19 And Art, Time-No-Time My friends and I named the epidemic the “TIME-NO-TIME”. But, the interaction of COVID-19 and art, the epidemic cancelled my exhibition schedule in one fell swoop. After 50 years of making and exhibiting artwork at almost all times...the work had nowhere to go. Of course, the first response was panic. In order to assert a little control over the TIME-NO-TIME, I decided to study and learn more about the trends in the global art market. I enrolled in an intensive class on artwork economics with Christie’s Auction House, studying under Dr. Clare McAndrew, a world-renowned analyst of global art business. I had been observing the changes happening re: online sales. All indications were that this segment would grow during the pandemic, reduce somewhat as it died down, but remain at 15-25% of sales going forward.     Moving Online: COVID-19 And Art Subsequently, several things intersected. I had hired Faceless Marketing, a full-service marketing agency prior to COVID-19, to re-brand me, polish up my personal website as well as my gallery website, and create a real presence on the internet. I was looking for more ways to exhibit even though galleries and museums were shut down. [...]

Mentoring and things | Musings| Susan Hensel Projects

Mentoring and things | Musings Why are all these people so happy? We all just began a big new experiment: COACHING PROJECT FOR A BETTER WORLD Mentoring and things . Earlier this summer, while I was on vacation, my dear friend and coach Peggy told me about this opportunity with Art to Change the World. And then my friend Layl invited me to apply for the grant, to be a mentor. Perhaps the universe was trying to tell me something. I really do love mentoring! So, I applied. I was accepted! […]

What to do when the GPS does not work | Finding my Way |Susan Hensel Textile Art

2021-08-04T14:53:12-04:00Articles, Embroidery Art, News, Exhibition|

What to do when the GPS does not work.?  I am finding my way. Have you ever had your GPS take you to the end of a bridge that does not cross?  or to the center of nowhere? My sense of direction, while not precise, is not horrendous either. With the gentle reminder of the iPhone, I can get to most places…even on time. Yet, I do love maps. My close friend Gwen keeps telling me I need to use maps in the car. But, when you are the only driver…maps aren’t much use as you are driving!  […]

Seek and Ye Shall Find | Susan Hensel Projects Art is still out in the world as well as online I look all the time. I look deeply at other people’s art every day. Seeking opportunities every day. Finding opportunities every day. I get opportunities sometimes! I’ve had kind of good run-on opportunities lately.  Taking chances has paid off.  This does not mean that I have avoided rejections, even dearly desired opportunities have rejected me lately.  It’s simply part of the process.  But sometimes you really do get lucky by taking a chance. Upwelling Story Susan Hensel | a story in four parts | 3-d embroidery

Upwelling Story Susan Hensel Upwelling Story Susan Hensel-During these times of fewer exhibitions I have been studying a lot.  One of my studies has been, and continues to be, with Transformational Creative Coach Tressa Berman.  I signed on for a six week session to investigate how I might prepare for the reopening of the art world.  It was clear to me that real-world obstacles to exhibition and sales still remained.  It was less clear to me how I might be sabotaging my progress…what kinds of beliefs and habits of thought could be inhibiting how I move forward.  I sometimes joke that parenthood brings on adult-onset-ADD. During this pandemic, it seems to be ADD on steroids! Too many ideas, too little focus. […]

GEOMETRIC STITCH | Abstract Art by Susan Hensel | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-10-01T17:36:29-04:00Embroidery Art, Exhibition|

The show that almost was! Welcome to the first inaugural curated exhibition on Susan Hensel Projects! In this new world, where long planned exhibitions are delayed or cancelled, I will be presenting curated collections from my website every couple of months. Because the pandemic delayed this the exhibition Geometric Stitch indefinitely, it seemed appropriate to share at least some of the originally scheduled show. This collection includes abstract art by Susan Hensel. It will likely be rescheduled by 621 Gallery, with whom I am very pleased to be working.  But, by the time it finds it place back in the schedule, it will likely be a somewhat different group of work!  So, without any more fanfare: Here it is! Click on the side arrows to view the show.  Click on individual images to learn more about each.   GEOMETRIC STITCH Abstract art by Susan Hensel […]

Juggling As Fast As I Can | COVID-19 Time | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-07-08T17:58:35-04:00Articles, News|

IT’S COVID-19 TIME, in which weeks pass in a day and a day takes weeks. TIME TO JUGGLE AGAIN! It is admittedly hard to develop flow in the studio when I have to stop and “juggle” again! I was very pleased a few weeks ago when a long-planned for the show was approved to open in August in Tallahassee, Florida.  The state was opening up and so was 621 Gallery, with COVID-19 safety guidelines in place.  The show is 3/4 packed and scheduled for pick-up in a couple of weeks. But COVID-19 has its own sense of time.  Florida has now exploded with the virus again, the show has been delayed indefinitely again and I will take all these perfectly packed boxes back to storage, making more room to work in the studio. […]

Why I persist | Covid and civil unrest | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-06-17T11:39:02-04:00Articles, Embroidery Art, News|

“Hope is a fragile thing, Peter continued, as fragile as a flower. Its fragility makes it easy to sneer at, by people who see life as a dark and difficult ordeal, people who get angry when something they can’t believe in themselves gives comfort to others. They prefer to crush the flower underfoot as if to say: See how weak this thing is, see how easily it can be destroyed. But, in truth, hope is one of the strongest things in the universe. Empires fall, civilizations vanish into dust, but hope always comes back, pushing up through the ashes, growing from seeds that are invisible and invincible.”-Michael Faber Many of you know that I live in Minneapolis, MN.  This is where the civil unrest began, with the homicide of George Floyd, in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic. The central east-west corridor that services my neighborhood, is destroyed. There are no grocery stores, no liquor stores, no pharmacies, no library, few banks, few post offices, and only one gas station, and few low-income apartments remain.  But we persist. And I persist in this studio.  My work is more important than ever.  Yesterday I wrote this post on Facebook for [...]

The Art Business in times of Covid | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-05-27T11:41:45-04:00Articles|

What have you been doing during this pandemic? I’ve been reading about business! What have you been doing during this pandemic? I am looking at the gallery scene, mostly in the US.  I have been listening to interviews with people like David Zwirner and Jeffrey Deitch.  Reading online magazines: The Art Newspaper, Artnet News, Hyperallergic, Artsy, Artspace.  It has been very interesting. Like many artists, nearly 100% of my planned exhibitions were delayed or canceled. I’m not yet suffering financially, although most artists are.  Most galleries are in or about to be in dire straits. Some of the artist-run spaces I know are closing. So are some of the mid-sized spaces. Studio crawls are attempting to go virtual. Museums are shut as tight as a drum! […]
