The Balls You Cannot See Coming Bring Unintended Results Life throws all kinds of balls at you. (Didn’t I just say that in a recent post?) Soft balls, beach balls, bouncy balls, bowling balls… You haven’t heard from me much lately…like since at least February? Things have been full of surprises around here…not all of them fun. […]

Saying “Yes” | Opportunity Knocks

2023-02-15T18:30:09-05:00Articles|

Saying “Yes” When Opportunity Knocks I just sent out a New Year’s Newsletter  from Susan Hensel Gallery + Projects.  The responses are mostly “Out-of-office” replies that need to be looked at.  But there are also sweet, nice emails from friends and clients.  The “kudos” that we all enjoy when then arrive. The social network responses about how hard I work.   I do work hard, I guess, between an appalling number of appointments and administration tasks. But I also work with great joy. I am always experimenting on multiple fronts at all times, assembling parts and ideas until, seemingly all at once, multiple pieces come together and are completed. So, while it looks like I suddenly made 3 new pieces, the reality is that they have been kicking around the studio, sometimes for months, before I have to put my foot down and “finish it up, dammit!” […]

WHAT’S YOUR STORY? Christie’s Marketing And why should you care?   I just attended my second Christie’s Auction House education program.  This one is on marketing.  I have enjoyed the education I receive from Christie’s. It’s mighty spendy, but the courses have great depth. You get to listen to global experts and representatives from the business of art. The first session  of  Marketing, Communications and PR for the Art World was all about brand development. […]

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait | Susan Hensel Projects | publication

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait Or so they say. Actually it takes paying attention and rattling a few cages sometimes. I first started working with Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Art a couple of years ago.  They are a gallery and publisher out of Barcelona.  I was intrigued with their exhibition program as well as their design work. […]

ART is…Episode 1 |a series from Susan Hensel Projects

2022-01-06T11:32:20-05:00Articles, Exhibition|

ART is…Episode 1 ART is…Episode 1. Artists are often asked: “Why is THAT art?” Sometimes the person goes on to say, “Isn’t art supposed to be beautiful? ” or “It doesn’t look like anything!”. We artists are always flabbergasted, challenged, unprepared and at a loss for words when asked these questions. For us “THE ART QUESTION” is sort of a settled question or we would not be spending so much time making it! But we are an inarticulate lot! We fumble around to answer your questions! We take Twists and turns and chase rabbits down rabbit holes! So, I thought I’d spend a few blog posts musing on this topic! Maybe you will find it interesting, enlightening, revealing or hogwash! Running a growing art studio | Susan Hensel Projects | Textile Art

2021-11-14T18:27:06-05:00Articles|

Running a growing art studio is running a business…sort-of. So, once again, I am musing about things.  My workflow has recently become a bit more than I can sustain. Good things are coming my way a bit more frequently.  Even good things take time to accomplish. Fulfilling deadlines and data needs are eating into creative time with materials.  Has there been an uptick in income to match this activity?  a tiny bit….but mostly the demands on my time have increased. So, once again I had to look at my actual personal financial budget and determine how much I could carve out for a studio assistant and what I needed them to do. […]

What to do when the GPS does not work | Finding my Way |Susan Hensel Textile Art

What to do when the GPS does not work.?  I am finding my way. Have you ever had your GPS take you to the end of a bridge that does not cross?  or to the center of nowhere? My sense of direction, while not precise, is not horrendous either. With the gentle reminder of the iPhone, I can get to most places…even on time. Yet, I do love maps. My close friend Gwen keeps telling me I need to use maps in the car. But, when you are the only driver…maps aren’t much use as you are driving!  […]

How Digital Art Is Made With ODETTA Digital – ESSENTIAL WORKS | Susan Hensel Projects

2021-03-16T10:48:13-04:00Articles, Exhibition|

How Digital Art Is Made For The Winter Exhibition It’s time for a story… I made the decision to join ODETTA Digital art on the SHIM Art Network just as the virus hit. This was around the same time most in-person art viewing was shutting down. I am still grateful and happy in doing so. If you don’t already know, the way I craft my art involves both personal planning and creativity and also computer assisting. I put together the color combinations and style of stitching. Then, I load the information into the digital framework which generates the patterns to bring things to life. […]
