What to do when the GPS does not work | Finding my Way |Susan Hensel Textile Art

What to do when the GPS does not work.?  I am finding my way. Have you ever had your GPS take you to the end of a bridge that does not cross?  or to the center of nowhere? My sense of direction, while not precise, is not horrendous either. With the gentle reminder of the iPhone, I can get to most places…even on time. Yet, I do love maps. My close friend Gwen keeps telling me I need to use maps in the car. But, when you are the only driver…maps aren’t much use as you are driving!  […]

Seek and Ye Shall Find | Susan Hensel Projects Art is still out in the world as well as online I look all the time. I look deeply at other people’s art every day. Seeking opportunities every day. Finding opportunities every day. I get opportunities sometimes! I’ve had kind of good run-on opportunities lately.  Taking chances has paid off.  This does not mean that I have avoided rejections, even dearly desired opportunities have rejected me lately.  It’s simply part of the process.  But sometimes you really do get lucky by taking a chance. Due to the state of the world, he initiated the second game in March 2020. Nathan created an experiment of international collaboration that got larger than anyone of us could ever have imagined. Many of you know that I have a deep background in artists books. Many of the books I created are in major collections all over the place, including the Museum of Modern Art. Art Collaboration with Susan Hensel | Ensemble Ouvert? | Susan Hensel Projects

2025-04-14T16:05:33-05:00Exhibition, News|

Art Collaboration with Susan Hensel in a Global Context Ensemble Ouvert…Excuse me?   The art world is global.  How’s that for a statement? And it involves Collaboration. And it is all in context. Living and working in the midwest, it is easy to lose sight of that.  Even though this may be obvious when you think about it, what I do, what all artists do,  is part of a very large, loosely organized global market of culture producers! No matter what, we all collaborate in a global context these days. But then the question is How do I connect with the larger world of art?  It’s pretty much impossible for Americans to travel right now to most countries of the world due to the pandemic.   Even if we were brave enough to get on airplanes to fly all over the world, many borders are closed to us right now. […]

While virtual exhibitions are still more common than in-person shows…a few things are moving out the door and into the world for a spell.  I can’t tell you how good it feels to have the work speak in the ways that were always intended. […]

Juggling As Fast As I Can | COVID-19 Time | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-07-08T17:58:35-05:00Articles, News|

IT’S COVID-19 TIME, in which weeks pass in a day and a day takes weeks. TIME TO JUGGLE AGAIN! It is admittedly hard to develop flow in the studio when I have to stop and “juggle” again! I was very pleased a few weeks ago when a long-planned for the show was approved to open in August in Tallahassee, Florida.  The state was opening up and so was 621 Gallery, with COVID-19 safety guidelines in place.  The show is 3/4 packed and scheduled for pick-up in a couple of weeks. But COVID-19 has its own sense of time.  Florida has now exploded with the virus again, the show has been delayed indefinitely again and I will take all these perfectly packed boxes back to storage, making more room to work in the studio. […]

Friendship And Practical Advice | Free Resources For Artists | Susan Hensel Projects

2020-07-08T17:59:57-05:00Articles, News|

Friendship and practical advice. My friend, Martha Bird, is a maker of traditional and sculptural basketry. She is a wonderful neighbor and friend I love going to for friendship and practical advice. We support each other on many levels. We bond over art, poodles and the power of art to support and help us heal from pains of being human. She came to this game of art later than I did (I think I was born making art) and it has been awe-inspiring to see her soar. You really should spend time on her new website. Wonderful images await you there. Which leads me to this: […]
