Middle Ground | New Exhibition | Susan Hensel |
Middle Ground a new exhibition April 2022 St. Paul’s Benedictine Monastery, St. Paul, MN From vastly differing beginnings these two artists meet in concert on the spiritual path. Both come from a sculptural background, well rounded in their art. James Quinten Young works in found materials, Susan Hensel works from a computer foundation to create her vision. Both bring us their vision of our place in the universe. Here we meet these differing perspectives where their spiritual journey marks the way for us to journey with them along this path. – Kathy Fleming, curator […]

Can Beauty help us | Perhaps a manifesto | Susan Hensel Projects |
Can Beauty help us? Perhaps a manifesto Can Beauty help us? I make art to learn what I am thinking and feeling. While it is always an internal investigation, I am engaged with the world and culture around me. I am a quiet contemplative, a delayed emotional reactor, a visual glutton. I think and mediate, I get mad the next day and I just simply have to look…all the time. From this essential disposition and with study and thought I have adopted a theory for my artmaking that I call “radical beauty.” So, here goes! Starting with a few appropriate [...]

ART is…Episode 1 |a series from Susan Hensel Projects
ART is…Episode 1 ART is…Episode 1. Artists are often asked: “Why is THAT art?” Sometimes the person goes on to say, “Isn’t art supposed to be beautiful? ” or “It doesn’t look like anything!”. We artists are always flabbergasted, challenged, unprepared and at a loss for words when asked these questions. For us “THE ART QUESTION” is sort of a settled question or we would not be spending so much time making it! But we are an inarticulate lot! We fumble around to answer your questions! We take Twists and turns and chase rabbits down [...]
Exhibiting during Covid Times | Susan Hensel Projects| Online art
EXHIBITING DURING COVID TIMES Or How to begin to exhibit internationally Exhibiting during Covid Times! Sigh! When the first lock down of covid hit, 100% of scheduled shows for Susan Hensel Projects were either cancelled or indefinitely delayed. Talk about PANIC! My new work was just getting picked up in a meaningful way nationally. I was in beginning conversations with a couple of small galleries. And,”BOOM!” NOTHING. All I could hear was crickets. But ART WILL BE SEEN! […]
Running a growing art studio | Susan Hensel Projects | Textile Art
Running a growing art studio is running a business…sort-of. So, once again, I am musing about things. My workflow has recently become a bit more than I can sustain. Good things are coming my way a bit more frequently. Even good things take time to accomplish. Fulfilling deadlines and data needs are eating into creative time with materials. Has there been an uptick in income to match this activity? a tiny bit….but mostly the demands on my time have increased. So, once again I had to look at my actual personal financial budget and determine how much I could carve [...]
Why Residencies? | Musings | Susan Hensel Projects
Why Residencies? It’s been a long time since I attended one. They do present certain challenges. Most of my adult life I was either a single parent of a child or a dog, neither of whom could attend residencies with me. Residencies are available all over the world. They range from yurts and tree houses to resort like accommodations. You can find residencies on a working farm. You can find residencies in the mountains of somewhere. They can be as basic as pit toilets and tents and more glamorous than anything you live in. Many, [...]
